There have been a few interesting studies lately…one showing that migraineurs are at an increased risk for low thyroid(…https://www.univadis.com/viewarticle/headache-monthly-essentials-october-2016-448229?&utm_campaign=ct-monthlyessentials_wf-manual_fq-adhoc_cp-uniannouncements-20161016&utm_content=1096559&utm_medium=email&utm_source=adhoc%20email&utm_term=#anchor2 ……………So, possibly we should be checking migraineurs a bit more often for thyroid(we usually do anyway…we do more blood(lab) tests in headache patients, mostly to make sure kidneys and liver are fine, due to OTC meds(ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen, acetaminophen)…..
A new study indicated that many(18%) of migraine patients with higher risk for cardiovascular problems take triptans(Imitrex, Maxalt, Zomig, etc)…..Generally, over 25 years, in 300 million patients, these have been safe drugs; there is a newer one possibly coming, Lasmitidan, that is very “selective”: it does not affect the coronary(heart) arteries at all. This will have a nice niche, but in general triptans have been safe drugs; the stronger form, sumatriptan injections, does temporarily constrict(shrink) the heart arteries 17%; with risk factors, we generally do not use the injections…..
