Thanks for the insightful comments; yes, allodynia can be VERY annoying; the presence of allodynia(tenderness) implies that the brain(and probably mostly the bottom of the brain, the brainstem) is firing constantly, so the allodynia actually stems from deeper structures. You may feel it out in your scalp, but it is from the brain itself. The presence of allodynia has some treatment consequences; triptans(sumatriptan, rizatriptan etc) are actually more likely to help people in the presence of allodynia, versus without the allodynia.
Hi. Thanks for your speedy comment! I have tried the various triptans you suggested. Because I am on SSRIs I eventually had what is called Serotonin syndrome. Is there another drug (either prescription or OTC) that might benefit my case? Many thanks! Ross
well there are other abortives that are non-triptan; from various nsaids, to Prodrin, to…Excedrin type meds……etc……
A few days after I had my first “bad headache” I felt like the top of my head was on fire! I mean — not like a sunburn — but like a camp fire was on the top of my head. I swear I could actually feel heat coming out of the crown of my head.
While I searched for answers for my “hot head” (pun intended) my “bad headaches” were finally diagnosed as chronic migraines. It was only then that I learned about Allodynia and it was purely by chance… a YOUtube video describing my symptoms to a T.
So, not only has my life changed dramatically due to migraines; it has changed due to Allodynia. I loved it when my husband brushed my hair: no more. I loved the shower water running over my head: no more. I loved the feeling of cool cotton pillow sheets against my face and neck: no more. My “no more” list goes on & on.
Today, the severity and how many migraines I get per month have greatly reduced — completely due to Dr. Robbins’ fantastic understanding, patience, cutting-edge medical knowledge and treatment — but that camp fire on the top my head still burns daily. That is, unless I have an ice pack atop my head… a really good look when going out! LOL.
Thanks for publishing a great article! I am positive there are still people out there wondering why their “sunburn” won’t go away.
