WHAT IS KRATOM?:Kratom is from the(same name) Indonesian tree; the leaves contain the active substances that, for centuries, people have used(and abused). In the US, Kratom has grown in use, but it’s legal status is iffy; the DEA(Ug 2016) issued a letter with the intent to re-classify it as Schedule I(along with LSD, heroin), but now has backed off and will decide in a month or 2. Kratom is still legal(most states), and is obtained on the internet. Kratom is legal in many countries.
The effects are: in lower doses, mild stimulation(like caffeine); higher doses: mild sedation, and euphoria/lowers anxiety. Kratom does have serotonin/norepinephrine properties(like an antidepressant), and mu(and delta, and maybe kappa) opioid agonist effects, same as the opioids. Similar to tramadol(Ultram). Posibly NMDA properties9antagonism) as well,w which is important.
EFFECTS: The alkaloids from the leaves are numerous: mainly, mitragynine: and it’s metabolites. The half-life is 3 to 6 hours, usually it’s effect(depending upon the strain) is 2.5 to 8 hours. Metabolized thru liver(and ?elsewhere), 3A4 system(so there are interactions, such as: black pepper, grapefruit juice).
There are different strains, with varying properties and strengths: red, whit, green.(least to most powerful).
Kratom’s popularity points out the fact that: We have ALOT of anxiety, depression, pain, and basically not great brain chemistry around. Evolution has only gone half-way; anxiety, depression, fatigue are present in over 25% of the population. Do, if someone feels terrible, and there is a drug that helps, I am not going to judge; However: it is better to see a doctor, and therapists(and exercise, etc.), get on legal, well-studies and controlled meds, and not self-medicate.
SIDE EFFECTS OF KRATOM: The usual opioid effects occur(tiredness, constipation), and also some antidepressant effects(decrease in sex drive, emotionally “flat” etc)….Withdrawal may occur, as with any addicting drug. Hallucinations and psychosis have been observed, along with other psychiatric effects. However, usually Kratom is well tolerated; addiction/dependence is a major concern.
KRATOM VS. OTHER STREET DRUGS: Certainly there are other much more dangerous drugs(heroin, and all of the newer opioid types (many from China), fentanyl-analogues, very dangerous). Howeve, self-medicating, whether with alcohol(most common), heroin, or Kratom, is just not a great idea. But, the anecdotes from thousands who have used Kratom,(it saved me…I finally feel normal again……it allows me to function….etc….) are heart rendering and compelling….but better to see a professional…….

Kratom has a PR problem but it is the most effective “Plant Ally” I have ever had: Many plant allies will turn on you after enough “abuse” but kratom is legitimately and robustly safe in part because your body will purge (i.e. projectile vomit) doses which are too high. Start with less than 5 grams and wait at least an hour between doses. Similar to alcohol’s “hangover” as a slap on the wrist but more immediate and it doesn’t pickle your organs.
No one has ever died from kratom and I honestly compare its toxicity to its plant-cousin coffee which will also punish you for using too much. It is a miracle for those who need it but having used kratom for 10 years, I wouldn’t recommend it for chronic use because, although outstandingly safe and effective, it will eventually create a withdrawal syndrome similar to a lighter version of tramadol WD. For years I was completely enamored with kratom (still am) because it helped me so much with my addiction to alcohol and opiates (which I no longer need) but, like everything, it must be used skillfully and in moderation.
Knowing its outstanding safety profile, I am not reluctant to suggest it to practically anyone wanting to try it but manage your expectations because many people don’t “feel” anything except better. It doesn’t make you high for Pete’s sake just like coffee doesn’t make you tweak. Although highly effective breakthrough pain-relief and SO MUCH safer than prescription opiates for safety it should still be respected. I gave my Rx percosets to my hurting mother and instead used kratom after my double hernia repair 3 years ago. *(This is why FDA wants to ban kratom: Because drug companies bankrolling the FDA are not adequately profiting from Americans’ pain. FDA’s budget is paid by ~60% taxes and 40% “contributions” from nice drug companies who so happen to manufacture and sell extremely dangerous and addictive opioid pills which are being consumed less as kratom is a safer alternative. Try it out if you want: It is safe. The disinformation is just a setup as FDA and DEA aggressively try to make another helpful plant illegal for free adults every single day. Lots of people get paid to make the world worse but we’re moving forward and we will look back on this age as anti-human. The nightmare of control by our obsolete institutions is almost over and if you’re addicted to dangerous opioids there is a way out and it doesn’t cost a fortune.
I stopped reading halfway through because of all of the misinfo. Whoever wrote this was either rushed or for some reason didn’t fully research the points they wanted to make. I enjoy Kratom and it does make me feel functional again despite bi polar anxiety low testosterone and social anxiety. BTW I glanced at the last statement and It’s not better to see a specialist. They’re paid to push pills for big pharma. And those pills ruin lives, do your research a bit better next time. Idk how this even made it online. Big pharma, the DEA and FDA are scared of natural remedies because it’s a money thing with them now. I can see why they want to extract certain things out of Plante just because of multiple active ingredients and the problems with interactions. But they literally schedule 1 a plant because the public is healing themselves with it and it’s cheap. They want it to be part of their program. Do your research please.
Kratom is like a miracle drug, It’s still not drug tested for, and legal in most of the states in the United states. we keep a list of all the states that are keeping kratom banned here https://drugsandbadideas.com/index.php/drugs/30-is-the-dea-banning-kratom-in-the-united-states Kratom is one of the safest, most effective pain relievers, it sucks the dea has it under fire. but we can help by keeping updated on what states are legal. : )
