My cardiologist hoped Wegovy might reduce the intensity of my chronic intractable migraines. The primary reason I am prescribed the medication is my cruddy metabolism, my inability to lose weight on a tightly controlled 1100 calories/per day eating plan; I have other issues relating to my autonomic nervous system. I began at the starting dose and have been moved up twice to my current dose of 1mg. Barometric pressure, heat and dewpoint play the most significant roles in triggering and in making worse my migraines. It makes it exceptionally difficult to find any medication to mitigate these inescapable triggers. In my case, with it now being summer and me being on month 3 of Wegovy, I can say that I’ve had zero reduction in intensity or frequency of migraines. A positive response to this class of medication by those for whom inflammation plays a central role in their migraines is possible. Keep in mind that these meds are expensive and do have side effects. I’m not a doctor but, unless you require such a medication for an FDA-approved use, I would not offer myself up to be a human guinea pig. After the [without exaggeration] hellish year I had thanks to Aimovig (I was prescribed it within months of approval, before prescriber information included side effects beyond temporary injection site pain and possible constipation), I will never again take a new-to-market medication unless it is required to save my life. Wait, see what happens as more people with comorbid illnesses take it and report adverse events to the FDA. I fully understand being excited at the prospect of having a better quality of life but, don’t let that desperation drive you to take chances. Read the initial studies, the data provided to the FDA by pharmaceutical companies. When, for example, pharmaceutical company studies show your specific condition only represented by 300 people and only 1/3 of them received the dose you will need, imagine how much more data will arise once thousands upon thousands of people (whose underlying illnesses fall outside the very narrow perimeter set during the study) begin taking the medication post-FDA approval. Be leery of any phrases like ‘game changer’ when it comes to a medication. These are lessons I learned during that aforementioned year.
