Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of sleep disorders in patients
with migraine headache.
Conclusions: These results reveal that patients with migraine headache
who have symptoms suggestive of a sleep disturbance have a high prevalence of sleep
disordered breathing, periodic limb movements of sleep, and poor sleep efficiency
as documented on overnight polysomnography. Sleep disturbance may impact the
control of or symptoms of migraine; therefore, clinicians need to query their
patients regarding sleep complaints and have a low threshold to obtain
polysomnography. This study raises important questions regarding the cause and
effect relationship between headache and sleep disturbance, and these issues are
worthy of further scientific study.
